Newsweek is one of the powerhouses of magazine journalism, but it, like so many of its print brethren, it has seen far better times. Changing technology and declining readership -- to name just a couple of factors -- have made the weekly news magazine passe in today's information environment.

The potential sale has stunned its employees, and that's easy to understand.
