...equals a rotten day for Democrats.
Here is the opening paragraph of today's Political Bulletin, published by U.S. News:
Another negative jobs report, together with a slew of new polling data out yesterday, sparked a new cycle of negative stories about Democratic election prospects in November. The AP reports, "The economy is looking bleaker as new applications for jobless benefits rose last week to the highest level in almost six months." Though "analysts had expected claims to fall," first-time claims for jobless benefits "edged up by 2,000 to a seasonally adjusted 484,000." The AP adds that "the rise in claims is a sign that private employers may be ramping up layoffs, which declined as recently as June."
